Shutting Power Off to Gantry

Aug 10, 2019 | Tech Tips, CT, Siemens

In this tip Kevin covers the safe way to service your Siemens Definition gantry by properly shutting off the power before beginning any service work.

Today, we’re going to discuss the proper process for shutting down your Definition system to safely service the gantry.

When you first arrive at the site to service the gantry, the first step is to use the middle button on your system control box to set it to “Computers Only.” This begins the process of properly powering down the system gantry.

Once the system is running in “Computers Only” mode and the gantry is in the process of shutting down, the next step is to identify which breakers need to be turned off. A helpful tip is to refer to the chart located on the inside of the Power Distribution Cabinet (PDC) door. This chart details the function of each breaker and its location in the room, as well as an explanation of the signal names.

The next step is to press the S-1 switch, also known as the service switch. Once activated, you’ll notice multiple breaker assemblies and breaker switches will turn off. At this point, all power has been removed from the gantry, allowing you to safely perform preventative maintenance, parts replacements, or other troubleshooting activities.

Important Note: Even though the breaker assemblies for the gantry power are off, some power remains active in the Power Distribution Cabinet. To safely service the cabinet, you must shut off the main F1 breaker or the site’s main power completely.

When your service work is complete, remember to restore power in the correct order. First, reset the breakers located in the lower section near the S-1 switch. Without resetting these breakers, the system will not power back on properly.

For maximum safety, if you’re uncomfortable working with this type of equipment or handling breakers, always shut off the main source power for the equipment and ensure it is locked out before proceeding.
