Checking for Leaks Water Cooled Components in MRI Room

Feb 10, 2022 | Tech Tips, Siemens

In this tip, Joe covers where and how to check for leaks to your water cooled components in your MRI equipment room. This is important when doing any PM or maintenance on the system to catch leak issues before they cause major issues.

Hi, this is Joe from DirectMed Imaging, coming to you again with another tech tip.

Today, we’re discussing how to check for leaks in the water-cooled components of your MRI system. This is an important step when performing a preventive maintenance (PM) inspection.

1A. Power Amplifier Check

  1. Identify the Water Connections
    • You’ll usually see two connections: an incoming (supply) and a return line.
  2. Look for Cracks or Leakage
    • Perform a visual inspection of both connections for any cracks, moisture, or residue indicating a slow leak.

2B. Gradient Cabinet Inspection

  1. Examine Fittings and Manifold
    • In the gradient cabinet, look at all water connections and the manifold itself.
    • Check for signs of leakage or damage to the fittings.
  2. Above the Gradient Cabinet
    • Water lines may run to the chiller assembly (TAS) or out to the gradient coil.
    • Any leaks here are critical because they’re positioned above power electronics, posing a higher risk if water drips down.

3C. What to Do If You Find a Leak

  1. Immediate System Shutdown
    • Power down the system at the console first.
    • Then, power down the equipment cabinets to ensure safe access.
  2. Address the Leak
    • Once the system is fully powered off, repair or replace the defective component or fitting.
    • Verify that no moisture is present before powering the system back on.
